Is there really such a thing as Legitimate Data Entry Jobs from Home?

Data entry is the most widely advertised work from home opportunities. Just google the phrase “work from home” and the search result will pop up thousands of data entry job sites. Many of the work from home data entry job sites are fakes that just exploit the gullible and desperate people looking for some work. The signs of fraud work from home data entry job sites are:
1-    They promise high earnings – to the tune of several hundred dollars per day and that too for less than 3-4 hours of work.  What is the need of studying hard and earning degrees if one can earn such good money through simple data entry work?
2-    They ask for a one-time payment of $30-$99 for allowing you to search for their data entry job banks.  Once you pay the money, you are lead to some dead and expired job links.

The fact is that data entry is a clerical job. The compensation therefore will be in the range of what a clerk can earn at the minimum rate and at the maximum rate. Work from home data entry may even pay slightly less as you are working from home. However, the legitimate data entry work will by no means be as simple as filling forms as the scammers advertise. It will involve conversion of PDF. files in to word documents, entering data from hard copies to word document, and may require some research work for gathering information and entering in to a word document.

If you are converting hard copies in to soft copies, then as a work from home data entry worker you may receive the hard copies by courier or you may have to pick them up from the employer. A writer may employ a data entry operator to convert whatever he has written in a diary or papers in to a word document or page maker. The hospital industry may use work from home data entry operators to type paper receipts, bills, patient records, and reports in to soft copies.  Every industry that uses computers has the need of data entry workers. If they do not have enough full time employees, they will look out for work from home data entry operators. They will not ask for any payments or deposits to assign you work.

As a work from home data entry operator, you need to be conversant with all MS Office tools and adobe page maker. Data may have to be converted from discs, floppies, and hard copies in to soft copies. The employer would expect your typing skills to be excellent. You may have to clear a small test to convince the employer about your ability to execute the project. The payment is done usually on an hourly basis or per word basis.  Normally payment is handed out immediately after the completed work is checked for quality.

Understanding What Latent Semantics Is

Have you ever come across the term latent semantics? Although it may sound too technical, understanding this application might help a lot, especially if you are dealing with documentation and information retrieval.

Latent Semantics, or technically called Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) is actually that technique used in natural language processing, particularly in vectorial semantics. This application analyzes a relationship between sets of documents and the terms they contain through a production of a set of concepts generally related to the terms documents. Patented way back in 1988 by Lynn Streeter, Karen Lochbaum, Thomas Landauer, Richard Harshman, George Furnas, Susan Dumais, and Scott Deerwester, the main context of this application is information retrieval.

Basically, latent semantics can be used in various applications. This new concept space can compare documents like data clustering or document classification. It can also efficiently find similar documents in different languages once it has analyzed a base set of translated documents. This one is called cross language retrieval. This application also finds relations between terms like polysemy and synonymy and once it is given some query of terms, it immediately translates those terms in to concept spaces before finding matching documents. This is called information retrieval. In any natural language processing, polysemy and synonym are important factors to a problem.

In latent semantics, synonymy is defined as the phenomenon wherein various words are described in similar ideas. Meaning, queries in a search engine can possibly fail to give relevant information that does not have the same words appearing in the query. An example is that when you search for “doctors”, the document will not give details that contain “medical practitioners” or “physicians”, although they are all synonymous. As with polysemy, it is the phenomenon where one word has different meaning. Meaning, when a computer scientist and a botanist seek for information about “tree”, they both can obtain different sets of information from such queries.

Latent semantics is also used a term-document matrix. This is described as the occurrence of terms in one document. The sparse matrix in which its rows directly correspond to its terms and its columns to the documents typically is a stemmed word that appears in a document.

Latent semantic analysis can be quite tricky especially if you have not fully grasped the whole idea on the importance of this application. Take time to read more about this concept so you will have a better idea on where you can apply this.
