Freedom Writers - An Intriguing Movie
Freedom Writers Wrote So the World Would Not Write Them Off
Freedom Writers is the inspiring story of modern day education. The idea was based on the Freedom Riders who fought against segregation during the Civil Rights Movements.
These writers are a group of students who faced many challenges in life but found acceptance and understanding in their teacher Erin Gruwell. Erin Gruwell wrote the book Freedom Writers Diary which was made into a major motion picture starring Hilary Swank.
The students taught by Erin Gruwell struggled daily with diverse problems. Their story was set during the Los Angeles riots. They did not see a future for themselves except in remand homes or walking the streets. Erin Gruwell made them read stories of teenagers who suffered like them to inspire them. She made these students who saw no hope in the future realize their potential as writers.
Erin Gruwell taught her students the grueling problems faced by teenagers in a war torn world. The diary of Anne Frank and the story of Zlata Filipovic a teenager who lived to tell her tale of war torn Sarajevo were two stories she gave them as examples. She inspired her students to write about their own experiences and brought them the hope that was lacking in their lives. When these teenagers wrote about their lives and the kind of alternate education they needed, Freedom Writers was born. They wrote about their experiences with drugs, poverty, adversity, gangs, violence, abuse, death, anorexia, dyslexia and other problems that they faced in their daily life. They set themselves free from their past and now face a brilliant future at university with an inspiration derived from writing. .
Freedom Writers are students who thought that education was another brick in the wall but learned that it was a tunnel with a light at the end. These students with their determined teacher chose to write and refused to write themselves off.
