Tips for Writing an Effective eBook

Writing an eBook can be rewarding both monetarily and personally. If you are really passionate about a subject and feel that you need to share that passion, then putting your thoughts and feelings in writing will give you immense satisfaction and may even bring you a nice income if you can manage to market it successfully.

However, there are some things you need to think about and remember before you actually begin to write.

  1. Be sure that your grammar, punctuation, and spelling skills are up to par. Nothing will kill your book sales like poor writing skills. If you are in doubt, then you should either look into some classes online or at a local college or pick up one of many books available for use as a reference.
  2. Be sure that you know how to use the formatting options available in your word processing program. A professional appearance will be a key to not only selling books, but also in your credibility. You want your customers to see that you are professional in every aspect of your writing.
  3. If you are writing fiction, one trick that many writers use is to write the ending first. This also works in most any type of non-fiction because you need to know what the end-goal or purpose of your book will be. The key is to be sure that the middle of your book connects the beginning to the end and that you have not gotten sidetracked and lost your reader somewhere in between.
  4. Make sure that your paragraphs are uniform in size. Try not to write paragraphs that are longer than six sentences in length. Studies have shown that the readers mind tends to wander and they lose interest if your paragraphs are too long.
  5. If your eBook is an informative one and not fiction, depending on the length, you should consider including a table of contents at the beginning of the book. It may even be appropriate to include an index in the back.
  6. To lend credibility to yourself as the author, it would be beneficial to you to include a short autobiography, with a picture, close to the front of the book. Especially with informative or instructional books, readers often want to know why the author is qualified to write about the given topic.

Finally, and most importantly, EDIT, EDIT, and EDIT again. It is not uncommon for a book to be edited three to four times before being published. Editing does not just mean proofreading. You should be editing for content as well.

Writing an eBook is not easy, and there is a lot of work involved in the writing process, but you will find that it may be a very enjoyable and relaxing outlet for the creative side of you that often gets overlooked. Good luck and happy writing!!!
